The next project

We moved into our house in December of 2010. I was 8 months pregnant. In the 6 months we've been there, we have completed the following projects (on top of becoming parents!):

Preston's nursery (details here)

From this:

To this:

Master bedroom and bath (details here)

From this:

To this:

Formal living room (details here)

From this:

To this:

Dining room (post with a breakdown of the room coming soon - I know I am behind on that one! Plus, I still need to hang a few things and put up curtains.)

Again, not bad for the short amount of time we've been there and all that's been going on!

We debated a bit over which room to do next. I wanted the foyer done next because it is the first thing people see when they walk in. It is covered in horrid wallpaper (surprise, surprise) and mustard trim (surprise, surprise). I want the wallpaper taken down and the walls painted a beautiful natural linen color that would coordinate with the dark slate floors. Because the foyer is so large, we have a beautiful marble sideboard that would work perfectly. I want to add a bench with pillows, a mirror, some artwork and family photos. Since we very rarely buy any furniture or accessories from a store - I've got to work at scouring over the usual suspects (estate sales, antique stores and Craigslist) to find just the right mix of old, new and repurposed. We would also add a glass door to our front door for more light. We got a quote from a contractor on removing the wallpaper and painting to include painting the staircase and spindles, as the ceilings are so high this is not a project we feel comfortable doing. The verdict? OUCH. Here's a few pics of our foyer before we moved into our house... it's so dark in there! It still looks like this, minus the furniture.

However, Brian wanted to do the playroom next. We are turning the downstairs master bedroom into a playroom for Preston and future kids (not anytime soon!) This room is also covered in wallpaper - imagine that! - but seems much more attainable. It has white trim already. Praise the Lord! So, we would need to remove the wallpaper, paint (we've already decided on Benjamin Moore's Salisbury Green), and collect furniture and play stuff for Preston. I have already started doing some searches on playroom ideas and I cannot wait to do this room! It will be so fun to pick stuff out for it and to really make it a fun place for Preston and his friends. I want to make it gender neutral just in case any girls decide to enter our family. This room also has an attached bathroom, so it would be fun to do a kids style bathroom that we would use for clean up after art projects, etc. This would be much more affordable to redo. But, furniture and other pieces could prove a little costly. Here is the playroom before we moved in/formerly the master bedroom... terrible pic but you get the idea.

So who won our friendly debate?

Brian! Bet you thought it was me, considering I'm pretty strong willed :) Wonder who Preston gets that from! What can I say, I am kind of a sucker for my two favorite men. We'll be doing Preston's playroom next, so stayed tuned for updates.

After the playroom is complete, we'll still have the foyer, the office, the guest bedroom, the upstairs bathroom, and the kitchen. Little by little, we're making this house OURS.

3 Years

Three years ago today, Brian and I tied the knot.

Since then, we have shared so many amazing memories. This past year has been one for the books. A new house and new baby have made our marriage that much fuller. When we first got married, I had an idea of what marriage would be like. In some ways, it has played out like I thought it would, but I never would have thought that three years later I'd be happier and more in love than I was on our wedding day. I am! Having a little one has made my heart so full for our family, sometimes it feels like it could burst. It's just the best feeling ever.

Brian and I had an awesome wedding. It was so fun! We just wanted to do it the Catholic way - a full and serious Mass followed by a raging party. It was everything we hoped it would be. We were so sad when it was over, but so ready for our honeymoon. There are still so many moments when I look at Brian and think "I am so lucky to be his wife." I really am! Here's a little post I wrote two years ago that describes him perfectly, and here's how we celebrated our first anniversary.

One of these days, I will write a post on how we met. It really is a cute and ironic story. Sometimes the love of your life is right in front of you and you don't even know it! Brian is surprising me with plans for tonight. We'll see what he has up his sleeve. He never disappoints! ;)

Happy Three Year Anniversary B! Love you!

Our New Friday Nights

Now that we've got a little one, we celebrate Friday nights a little differently. We headed up to our church, St. Louis, for their annual Hole-in-One fundraising event. This year, we took the little man and had fun showing him this event that we've always enjoyed going to. We saw the Johnston's there, as well as a few other family friends and watched kids run around. Preston loved watching them. It is just getting so fun to take him places! Here are a few pics from the night.

I love Friday nights now :)

Current Design Obsession

I've been in a little bit of a home design rut. It seems that everyone is really into chevron, ikat, and geometric patterns right now. While I LOVE ikat, the others are a little too modern for me. I have always been drawn to more vintage type stuff.

I tweeted about this, but I am seriously loving vintage tea towels right now. Am I 90 years old?

It all started because I wanted to find some artwork for our dining room and entry hall. I was looking around at paintings and prints and everything just seemed so expensive. I'm not sure why, but "tea towel" popped in my head.

A quick search on the vintage section of Etsy yielded some amazing finds. At first, I thought about going with a 1963 wall calendar, because that is when our house was built. I couldn't find any cute ones though. However, I stumbled upon some seriously fantastic ones. How gorgeous would some of these be if framed in huge gallery frames? And can we say cheap art?!?!? They range from $7-$16!

I've obviously drawn to birds. I mean, I want all of them! The "happy heart" one may have to make it's way to my house. Do you see the potential, or am I just crazy? By the way, I can already see my loving husband (and probably some of my friends) making fun of me for this post. I really am already on the verge of being an old soul, so this might set me over the edge.

Happy Father's Day

First, happy Father's day to my dad :)

My dad is awesome. He is patient, never raises his voice, and he and I have always had a special bond. I love him so much and it has been so fun to see him as Mook - Preston's grandpa.

And Happy Father's Day to Brian's dad, Robo :)

Now, for Preston's daddy. Preston asked if it would be okay if he wrote a little something on the blog for his daddy. I told him that was okay by me. So, here is what Preston has to say about his daddy, my husband, Brian.

Dear Daddy,
You are the best daddy I could ever ask for. You were the first person to ever hold me and look at me. I opened my eyes for you and stopped crying when I saw you. You make me laugh and smile more than anyone else. As soon as I see you in the room, my eyes light up because I can't wait for you to hold me. Whenever you make that funny face and say "daddy daddy daddy daddy" really fast, I go crazy! You also take really good care of me in the mornings. It is nice how you help mommy in the mornings by putting on my clothes for the day and changing my diaper. I like that you always get on the floor with me, and that you always lift me high in the air. You are my favorite nap spot. I like that you put my pajamas on every night. You know me so well. You know how to make me stop crying and when you walk across the room, I follow you with my eyes. I love you so much Daddy!

Love, Preston

Happy Father's Day everyone!

Advice for BFing Moms

Hope this post isn't too TMI for some of you! You've been warned :)

So, I've been breastfeeding for a little over 4 months now. Recently, I have had a lot of friends ask me about it, especially those expecting little ones. I thought I would do a post for my expecting friends, or soon-to-be-expecting friends ;) with a few things that helped me when it came to breastfeeding.

First of all, let me start out by saying that breastfeeding (BFing) is one of the hardest things I have ever done. It is a huge sacrifice, it hurts, and it is not the "madonna and child" experience books and TV will have you believe it is. It took 8 days for my milk to come in... every book says it usually takes 3-5, so we had to supplement with formula from the beginning. Then, he wanted to nurse around the clock. My body couldn't handle it, so I pretty much pumped around the clock. Because I did this, it seriously affected my supply. In looking back, I should have pushed through the pain and nursed rather than pumped. To this day I still have supply issues. I have never exclusively breastfed and that is okay. Most important piece of advice - IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE ONE WAY OR THE OTHER. Not every baby is either formula fed or breastfed. For Preston, we do both and it works for him. Formula is not poison. Crazy how some moms think that it is! And he still gets majority breastmilk, so he is still getting all the benefits.

I have to say that through all the trials of BFing, it is one of the things I am most proud of in my life. Brian is really proud of me too. Preston loves it, and those are the things that keep me going.

So, here are a few of the things you will need if you want to BF:
Link
1) A good pump. I have this one and I love it. Couple tips about pumping in general... you will have a better result with it plugged into the wall, rather than on battery mode. Also, you have to change out the batteries A LOT, which can get pricey since it takes 8 double A batteries, so another reason to plug in. Also, I have never been a good pumper. Preston can always get more than the pump can. I mean, my pump is top of the line, but according to my pediatrician and my lactation consultant, some people just aren't good pumpers. How long do I pump at each sitting? Usually about 10-15 minutes.

2) BFing accessories. They are expensive, but unfortunately in the beginning, I found many of them necessary. The boppy pillow was a must. I still use it to nurse him when I'm at home, although I have mastered nursing him without it. Also, a nursing cover is a must. For actual feedings, I needed a nipple shield (yes, I laughed when I first heard this term too). These are great because every time Preston latched onto me, I screamed and cried in pain. Don't want to scare you... just being real. This helped take some of the pain away. I used them for about 3 weeks, because I was tough enough to let him nurse without any assistance. Also, forget the topical gels like this - I needed something stronger. There is this stuff called Dr. Brown's Nipple Ointment and your doctor can write a prescription for it. It has to be made at a compound pharmacy which takes a few days, but it is lanolin mixed with ibuprofen. It helps when there is bruising and it soothes too. It works great! If you want to store and freeze your milk, I recommend NUK storage bags. They are cheaper than others and do the job. I get mine from Target. Also, the first month I leaked a lot. I found that these pads were by far the best, but I was going through like 6 a day. It was getting to be expensive. My mom can sew, so I had her cut up the centers of some cloth diapers into round pads that I could throw in the washing machine. These were much more economical and so much more absorbent. I didn't have to change them nearly as much.

3) Last thing...nursing clothes. These tops from Target. I bought like 8 of them in different colors and still wear them almost daily. When you BF, your whole wardrobe has to accommodate it and these paired with cardigans made it easy! If I could go back in time, I would have prepared my wardrobe for nursing while I was "nesting" for Preston. Now, I try to wear things that button down or loose fitting, or these shirts also from Target.

4) Be prepared when you're in the hospital. When you pack your hospital bag for delivery, don't forget: boppy pillow, your pump, and a couple nursing tanks.

5) A support system. This was key for me. My mom was this person for me. She was by my side in the beginning when I would just cry and cry over nursing. But when a nursing session would go well, she would be the first person I would celebrate with. Having someone who has done it before and who you are very comfortable with, makes it so much better. Additionally, Brian was really there for me through it all. When you're BFing, it is 100% on you. So, Brian would change all the diapers, get up in the middle of the night and be with me while I nursed him, etc. He was amazing through the tough times, and it still so supportive of me in my quest to nurse.

Now, a few other pointers. My pediatrician's office has a lactation consultant on staff. This was a big plus for me, as I have visited her once, and called her a few times. This is definitely something to look into when you are looking for your pediatrician.

As for boosting your milk supply, I have talked to two different lactation consultants and learned so much, so I am excited to pass this on. If you have supply issues like me, there are ways to try to boost your supply. A few of these really worked for me!

1) Fenugreek. Buy it at GNC and take 3 pills, 3 times a day. Worked like a charm! I will warn you, fenugreek is a natural decongestant, so I have had a runny nose for like 2 months now!

2) Mother's Milk Tea or Milkmaid Tea. You can buy these at Whole Foods. I prefer Mother's Milk, because it is cheaper and has all the same ingredients. I also think the taste is a little better, although both are pretty bitter.

3) My OBGYN gave me this tip: After the last feeding of the night, and the baby is put to bed, pump. For the first week or so, you won't get anything, but after a while, you will slowly start getting more. I did this, and went from getting about an ounce every night to four to five ounces. Also, pumping in general is supposed to help boost your supply, but I never really saw the benefits from that.

4) Oatmeal and almonds. One of the lactation consultants at the children's hospital where I worked told me about these. I eat two of them a day, in between the fenugreek pills. They have everything breastfeeding moms need for a supply boost - almonds, oats, flax seed. When I was on maternity leave, I would eat a big bowl of oatmeal every morning. My friend also made me oatmeal cookies. I would also just eat raw almonds all the time. All of these helped.

BFing is hard, but it does get easier and you learn to live your life while nursing. It takes a while, but you really do. Hope this list helps some of those preparing to BF! I am also glad I got all this down, so that I will remember for next time :)
